Junior Bo Cheesman and sophomore Colin Nicholson each notched a goal and an assist for Lake Superior, which scored two goals in 21 seconds to bring the Lakers back from a 2-0 second-period deficit during Friday’s non-conference game against St. Lawrence at Taffy Abel Arena to tie 2-2.
LSSU (1-2-2) outshot the Saints 11-9 in the third period and 4-2 in overtime, but the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Both teams had several good scoring chances during the final stretch. With two minutes remaining in regulation, LSSU’s Steve McJannet and Nathan Ward nearly scored on St. Lawrence goaltender Kevin Ackley. The Saints’ Rich Peverley came up with a rebound off Ward’s shot and forced LSSU goalie Matt Violin to make a tough save at the other end of the ice.
St. Lawrence’s Jim Hakewill opened the scoring at 4:05 of the first period. The Saints made it 2-0 on T.J. Trevelyan’s goal at 1:29 of the second period.
Cheesman scored at 3:25 and Nicholson at 3:46 of the second period. Nicholson and Mike Kautz drew assists on Cheesman’s goal. Adrian Kremblewski and Cheesman assisted on Nicholson’s game-tying marker.
Violin totaled 23 saves for the Lakers, while Ackley had 28 saves for St. Lawrence (1-4-3).
LSSU was 0-for-6 on the power play. The Saints were 0-for-2.
When St. Lawrence and LSSU met last year in Canton, N.Y., the Saints compiled 52 shots on goal against the Lakers, and the teams also tied, 2-2.
