Brown kicked off its season with a 4-0 win over Quebec Trois-Rivieres. Brown’s five freshmen were particularly impressive and took part in three of the four goals. The Bears started a bit sluggish but responded quickly to play an overall not so sloppy exhibition game at home versus last season’s Canadian national champion.
“At times I was pretty happy with how we were playing today,” said Brown head coach Roger Grillo. “We still have plenty to work on but overall I thought we played pretty well.”
Freshman defenseman Dylan Row had two assists, and forwards Antonin Roux and Steve Sigaty each scored.
Quebec Trois-Rivieres had many good chances to score early as Brown gave up many odd-man chances with poor puck handling early in the game. But they were unable to convert as Brown began to take over the game as the period went on.
Brent Robinson scored the game winner late in the first on a patient shot from in-close over goaltender Dany Dallaire.
Roux made it 2-0 on a bullet slapshot in the second. The third period scoring came from Chris Swon on a rebound and Sigaty on an upper corner shot from the right side.
“As a class, we know there are high expectations for us,” Sigaty said. “We’re getting a chance to show what we can do now and we did a good job today.”
Brown’s marquee goaltender Yann Danis played a crisp first period. His best save did not count in the stats – as an interference penalty was whistled a Quebec Trois-Rivieres player broke in all alone on Danis, but he casually made a jaw-dropping glove save.
Kevin Kliman, playing in his first game, was only tested a couple times in second period and junior Scott Rowan completed the shutout.
