Six different Pioneers scored in Denver’s 6-3 win over Northeastern to complete the two-game sweep. Head coach George Gwozdecky recorded his 200th career win as freshman goaltender Glenn Fisher made 22 in his regular-season debut. Junior Kevin Ulanski led the Pioneers with one goal and an assist in front of 5,729 fans on homecoming weekend. The Pioneers improve to 4-0 this season, while Northeastern drops to 0-2-1.
“We came mentally prepared to play,” Gwozdecky said. “Even though we struggle sometimes to score goals, we felt in control of the game. It was good to see Glenn Fisher get his first win in his first game.”
Senior Greg Keith gave the Pioneers an early lead as he scored his second goal of the season off a feed from freshman Matt Carle. Junior Jussi Halme also assisted on the play and now has scored at least one point in each of the four games.
The Huskies quickly answered the Pioneers first-period goal just four minutes into the second period. Off a Pioneer turnover, Jason Guerriero cleared the puck through defenders for a shorthanded, breakaway goal to even the score at 1-1. Senior Connor James broke loose through defenders on a breakaway of his own and scored a shorthanded goal to put Denver up 2-1.
Nearly two minutes later the Pioneers struck again from the one-two punch of freshman Adrian Veideman and sophomore Gabe Gauthier. Off a pass from Gauthier, Veideman’s quick shot in front of the crease beat Huskie goaltender Tim Heneroty for his first goal of the season. Junior Jon Foster banged in a pass from Gauthier and sophomore Brett Skinner to extend the Pioneers’ lead to three goals at the end of the two periods.
Ulanski and junior Luke Fulghum’s added goals in the third period to seal the 6-3 win.
