Justin Micek scored shorthanded in the third period, providing a two-goal lead and what would be the game-winning goal in Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s 5-2 victory over No. 3 Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday.
Stevens Point took third place in the NCHA Peters Cup Championship at the Cornerstone Community Ice Center, crippling River Falls’ hopes of an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Micek’s goal put the Pointers (15-12-2) ahead 3-1 with 16:10 left in the third period. UWSP defenseman Jordan Blair added a power-play goal after River Falls (22-6-1) cut the lead to 3-2 on a Nate Kotewa goal.
Zenon Kochan, David Scott and Derrick Johnson (empty net) also scored for the Pointers. Jim Murphy scored the Falcons’ first goal.
Ryan Scott made 22 saves for Stevens Point, which outshot River Falls 28-24. Dan Meneghin had 23 saves for the Falcons.
