Sacred Heart topped Connecticut, 6-3, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Challenge at Harbor Yard Arena on Saturday night. The Pioneers improved to 3-3-2 overall, 3-1-0 in the league, while the Huskies fell to 1-6-1 overall, 0-5-1 in the MAAC.
Sacred Heart jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Marc-Andre Fournier. Fournier’s first goal was assisted by Les Hrapchak and Chuck Metcalfe and the second a power-play goal at 10:59 was from Rocco Molinaro and Martin Paquet. The Huskies came back though with a goal by Chris Uber at 16:29 assisted by Michael Hoffman and Eric Nelson to end the first period trailing 2-1.
UConn came out quickly in the second period and tied the score at two on a power-play goal by D.J. Miller at 1:00 assisted by Mark Murphy and Jon Ames . Sacred Heart answered at the 13:05 mark with a goal by Ryan Bremner from Fournier and Metcalfe to make the score 3-2.
In the third period the Pioneers put the game away with three more goals. The first came at 1:39 by Barclay Folk assisted by Mike Reagan and Michael Forsland. Molinaro scored the second goal of the period at 3:10 from Nick Nutcher. Sacred Heart’s final goal came at 12:51 by Paquet assisted by Garrett Larson and Konn Hawkes.
Connecticut added one late goal at 18:32 in the third by Hoffman from Miller and Kurt Kamienski for the final score of 6-3.
Artie Imbriano stopped 27 shots on goal, while Eddy Ferhi recorded 22 saves. Sacred Heart outshot Connecticut, 33-25.
