Webb’s Second Goal Is OT Winner For Union

Union’s Jordan Webb flicked his second goal of the game past Bemidji State’s Kelly Shields two minutes into overtime as the Skating Dutchmen posted a 4-3 victory over the Beavers Friday at the John Glas Fieldhouse.

Union forced overtime with just 3:25 to play in regulation, as Marc Neron took advantage of a slashing penalty on BSU’s Jean-Guy Gervais and scored with assists from Scott Seney and Brian Kerr to tie the score at 3-3.

For the third time in four games against Union College, BSU scored first as Jared Hanowski netted his first goal of the season at the 7:19 mark of the first period. But the lead was short-lived, as Union scored two goals in a span of 2:35 to take a 2-1 advantage. Webb brought the Dutchmen even with an even-strength tally at the 11:14 mark of the first, and Nathan Gillies picked up his third goal of the year at 13:49 off the pass from Joel Beal and Randy Dagenais.

But Andrew Murray came up big for the Beavers, redirecting a blue-line bomb off the stick of Peter Jonsson into the net to even the score at two goals apiece at 11:15 of the second.

The Beavers recaptured the lead, 3-2, at the 16:29 mark of the second when freshman Ryan Huddy netted his first collegiate goal. Marty Goulet snuck behind the net and fired a pass to Huddy at the edge of the crease, and Huddy found the net to give BSU a lead it would hold until Neron’s goal at the 16:35 mark of the third.

“This was a tough way to lose,” BSU head coach Tom Serratore said. “We carried the play, and this is a tough pill to swallow. Our players played hard. The third period was key, losing on the power play. Hopefully our guys will respond tomorrow.”

Shields stopped 17 of 21 shots faced in his NCAA debut; he took the loss for BSU. Kris Mayotte went the distance for Union, saving 32 of 35 shots faced to earn the win. Joel Beal had three assists for the Dutchmen.

The loss extends BSU’s winless streak to 11 games, dating back to last season. It is the second-longest winless streak in school history, trailing only an 15-game winless streak (0-13-2) from Nov. 26, 2000 to Feb. 9, 2001. BSU’s last victory came Feb. 8, 2002 in a 5-1 win at Air Force.

Bemidji and Union are back in action Saturday.
