Bemidji State found the net in crucial situations Friday at the All Seasons Arena, going 3-for-6 in power-play opportunities as Guylaine Hache netted a hat trick to give the Beavers a 6-2 win over Minnesota State.
After the Beavers came out of the gates flat, giving up a goal to Mankato’s Tristin Stephenson just 1:41 into the first period, they settled down. Guylaine Hache made good on a pass from Amber Fryklund to beat the MSUM goaltender with just over two minutes to play in the period to bring the score to, 1-1.
The second period belonged to the Beavers. BSU took the lead, 2-1 when Lisa Peters, the Beavers’ all-time top-scoring defensemen, scored an unassisted goal 6:51 into the period. Hache found the net for her second goal of the game less than four minutes later (10:29) with an assist credited to Lill Raynard on the play.
Bemidji State was not finished yet, adding one more goal to finish the second period with a 4-1 lead over the Mustangs. Fryklund scored a shorthanded, unassisted goal at the 15:53 mark of the period.
The Beavers came out if the second intermission picking up right where they left off. The Mustangs’ Amanda Osborn was called for a high sticking penalty late in the second period and would leave her team skating shorthanded for the first 1:24 the third period.
It took just 26 seconds for the Beavers to take advantage of the power play to go up 5-1; Hache notched her second power-play goal of the evening to record her first career hat trick. But Minnesota State would not let BSU celebrate the achievement, responding to the quick BSU goal with one of its own.
Fifty-seven seconds after the Hache goal, Kristina Koga beat the Beaver goaltender, Anik Cote, for the Mustangs’ second goal of the night. At the 17:53 mark of the third period freshman Carly Nappier would make sure BSU kept its four-goal lead when she scored her second goal of the season at the to make the score 6-2.
BSU head Coach Bruce Olson was pleased with the overall play of the Beavers. “We played really well for three periods tonight. It is a nice victory and we are really happy with the way everyone performed on the ice.”
Hache became just the seventh Bemidji State women’s player to record a hat trick. “Guylaine had an outstanding game,” said Olson. “She played very well on the power play.”
