Bulldog coach Bob Daniels said he was worried about the game tonight after the rout on Friday. His team would not slip into complacency.
Chris Kunitz and Mike Kinnie led the attack while key goaltending by Mike Brown helped the Bulldogs earn a 5-1 win.
“Ferris State came out and picked up where they left off last night,” Falcons coach Scott Paluch said. “They didn’t get the early lead like they did last night, but they were crashing the net and creating scoring chances.”
Bowling Green goaltender Jordan Siglett absolutely robbed Ferris State early in the game. Many of the shots he faced throughout the game were quality scoring chances. Ferris State would not be denied though. Jeff Legue passed the puck to a streaking Kunitz, who cut through the crease and backhanded a shot past the diving goaltender to make it 1-0 at 8:42. Kunitz added another goal at 17:52 by one-timing a pass from Troy Milam that slipped through Siglett’s pads and across the goal line to make it 2-0.
Bowling Green had renewed confidence coming out for the second period. However, it was the Bulldogs who continued their onslaught on the Falcons. Tim Vokey rifled a slapshot over the left shoulder of Siglett to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead at 14:08.
Bulldog goaltender Mike Brown saw the action on his end of the ice pick up in the third period. D’Arcy McConvey got the Falcons on the board with a slapshot that found daylight through the pads of Brown to make it 3-1 at 2:34. Ferris State made a few mistakes and found itself on the power play and then two-men short for over 1:30. Bowling Green knocked on the door several times, but Brown was there to keep it shut.
Shortly after killing the 5-on-3 opportunity, Ferris State went to work on a power play of its own. Derrick McIver passed across the crease to a wide open Kinnie. Siglett dove over to make the save, but Kinnie shot the puck over the sprawling goalie at 11:22 to make it 4-1. Kinnie added another goal at 16:31 on a similar play to make it 5-1.
“The third period was all special teams,” Paluch said. “I felt we had our best chances early in that power play. Thirty seconds in, we were cycling the puck well and got some shots off. We just couldn’t capitalize. Then Ferris State comes down and capitalizes on a power play.”
“This was a big win for us,” Daniels said. “The league is so competitive. For us to come out with two wins this weekend is huge.”
Ferris State travels to Notre Dame next weekend for a two game set. Bowling Green hosts Findlay on Friday night.
