Berkhoel Backstops Pioneers’ Win Over Northeastern

Adam Berkhoel made 29 saves, leading second-ranked Denver to a 3-1 victory over Northeastern on Saturday.

The Pioneers (3-1) managed a split of a weekend in Boston. They lost 4-2 to Boston College on Friday.

Connor James, Aaron MacKenzie and Lukas Dora scored for Denver. Mike Morris scored the lone goal for Northeastern (1-1-1).

Northeastern goalie Keni Gibson made 27 saves.

Denver got off to a quick start, with James scoring on the power play 3:44 in. He took a pass from Jon Foster and beat Gibson to the glove side for his third goal of the season.

Morris answered with a power-play goal of his own at 10:09, getting a feed from Jason Guerriero at the back door.

But MacKenzie gave the Pioneers the lead for good with 2:36 left in the first period on a slap shot from the point.

Dora added the insurance with just over five minutes left in the second period. Luke Fulghum’s pass sent Dora in on a 2-on-1 break, and Dora took the shot himself, beating Gibson stick side.
