Junior captain Brett Engelhardt scored two goals and assisted on a third and sophomore linemate Bryan Perez had a goal and three assists as Michigan Tech spoiled St. Lawrence’s home opener with a 7-1 romp Friday night.
The Huskies blew the game open with a pair of power-play goals by Engelhardt in the second period and pulled even on the season at 1-1. St. Lawrence fell to 1-2.
The Huskies broke a scoreless tie with goals 1:30 apart late in the first period. Clay Wilson opened the scoring at 16:27 on a tuck in under Saint starter Kevin Ackley’s pads to finish off a shorthanded two-on-one. It went to 2-0 just 1:30 later when freshman Chris Conner scored his first collegiate goal.
It went to 3-0 just 4:09 into the second when Perez scored from right in front, but the Saints stayed in it with a power-play goal by sophomore Josh Anderson at 9:36 of the second. Ellsworth then scored his two power-play goals to make it 5-1 after two periods.
Colin Murphy greeted Saint backup goaltender Mike McKenna with a goal just 25 seconds into the final period, and defenseman Nick Toneys scored the final goal of the game at 11:39 of the third.
Sophomore goaltender Cam Ellsworth turned in a solid 28-save night in the Michigan Tech nets to earn the victory while three Saint goalies combined for 34 saves.
