St. Cloud State got revenge on the Bemidji State Beavers, and also its first win of the season with a 4-2 victory Sunday at the National Hockey Center.
Josefin Pettersson got the Huskies going early, as she scored her first collegiate goal on a power play to make it 1-0 SCSU. Carrie Holldorf and Abby Cooper assisted on the tally.
SCSU took a two-goal lead into the second, as Holldorf scored a goal of her own from Krista Simonson and Kelly Stewart to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Bemidji came back to score two goals in the second period, the first from Emily Curcuruto and the second a tally from Kerri McEwen.
The Huskies came right back despite managing just two shots on goal in the third period as both found the back of the net. Ashley Stewart scored her first goal as a Husky from Jennifer Swanson, and Abby Cooper sealed the win with an empty-netter from Tina Ciraulo to give SCSU and head coach Jason Lesteberg their first win of the 2002-2003 season.
“It feels good to get our first win. It’s great for the kids, for them to get a sense of victory. They now understand how hard we must work, and when we do, just like today, positive things will happen on the ice,” Lesteberg said.
