Matt Owens of Connecticut scored a goal and added two assists to give the Huskies a 4-3 win over the University of Ottawa in exhibition play on Sunday afternoon at the UConn Ice Arena.
Connecticut opened the game’s scoring at 2:42 mark of the first period on a power-play goal from D.J. Miller. Owens earned his first of three points on the day, and Michael Hoffman scored his first collegiate point, as both assisted on the goal.
Just under three-minutes later, Ottawa’s Jean-Luc Martin tied the score on the power play. At the 15:44 mark of the period, on another power play, Owens passed the puck from behind the net to Tim Olsen, who flicked it into the top right side over the shoulder of Ottawa goalie Mathieu Blanchard. To end the period, Hugo Giguere evened the score on the first regular strength goal of the day.
UConn out shot Ottawa, 25-11, for the first period.
After almost eight-minutes of goalless action, Owens notched an unassisted tally at the 13:02 mark. Again, Ottawa tied score on a shot from Brock Boucher with 1:08 left in the period.
UConn took the lead for the third and final time in the game just 15 seconds into the third period as Jon Ames notched Connecticut’s third power-play goal.
