Holy Cross hung on to take a 3-2 win over Connecticut on Friday night at the Hart Center.
The loss dropped UConn to 11-13-7 overall, 10-8-5 in the MAAC, and into sixth place in the league standings. Holy Cross (14-11-5, 11-7-5) stayed in fourth place in a tie with Canisius, after the Griffs defeated Sacred Heart.
Jeff Dams put Holy Cross on the board just under the three-minute mark of the first period during the power play. UConn countered at the midpoint (11:22) of the period, also during a power play. Ron D’Angelo sent a pass out to the right point for a waiting Mike Boylan. Boylan took the slapshot that sailed over the glove of Holy Cross goalie Derek Cunha. Kurt Kamienski was also credited with an assist.
Holy Cross took the 2-1 lead at the 12:44 mark of the middle stanza for the third power-play goal of the night. R.J. Irving took a slapshot from the middle of the blue line over a diving Matt Herhal. The puck flew over the left shoulder of UConn goalie Artie Imbriano for the go-ahead score.
Chris Sullivan notched the first even-strength goal of the game just 1:52 into the final period to give Holy Cross the 3-1 lead. The Huskies cut the Crusaders lead to one at the 13:07 mark. After several saves from Cunha, Evan Schwarz found the loose puck in front of the net and flicked it up and over a fallen Cunha. Jon Ames and Herhal assisted on the goal.
Connecticut and Holy Cross will square off again on Saturday evening at the UConn Ice Arena in Storrs at 7:30 p.m.
