Clarkson moved into second place in the ECAC Friday night, topping Harvard 4-1 at Cheel Arena to slip past the Crimson in the standings.
The Crimson continued a trend of getting behind early, as the Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest. Freshman centerman Mac Faulkner received a cross-slot pass from linemate Jean Desrochers and sent the puck over a sprawling Dov Grumet-Morris for the quick lead.
A Dominic Moore power-play tally at the 9:01 mark knotted the score at one, set up by Brett Nowak and co-captain Peter Capouch. The goal, scored less than 30 seconds into the man advantage, was Moore’s ninth of the season.
The Golden Knights regained the lead at 13:40. Randy Jones’ shot from high in the slot sailed over the net and caromed off the boards out to the left side. A crashing Kevin O’Flaherty tucked the puck past the pads of Grumet-Morris for his 12th of the season.
The Knights extended their lead to 3-1 on a goal that was scored in the same manner as O’Flaherty’s. Chris Blight poked the carom off a Jay LaTulippe shot past Grumet-Morris on the power play.
That goal chased the freshman netminder from the game, as Will Crothers came out to start the second for the Crimson.
While the scoring came fast and furious in the first, the two teams then went more than 30 minutes without scoring. The Golden Knights broke up that streak when LaTulippe got the puck on a breakaway, skated in and beat Crothers stick-side to give Clarkson the 4-1 lead, which would hold up as the final score.
Crothers finished with 14 saves in relief of Grumet-Morris, who made six stops in the first period. Mike Walsh made 23 in the winning effort for Clarkson.
The Crimson falls to 10-11-3 and 9-6-2 in the ECAC, while the Golden Knights improve to 12-11-6, 8-4-5 in the conference.
