Providence defeated Quinnipiac, 7-0, on Saturday at Schneider Arena in an ECAC Eastern League contest.
The Friars scored the only goal they would need in the first period as junior Jenn Butsch tallied an unassisted shorthanded goal at 2:41 of the first period. Sophomore Darlene Stephenson scored at 10:14 of the opening period to give the Friars a 2-0 lead.
The Friars increased their lead to 3-0 in the second period as junior Danielle Culgin recorded her ninth goal of the season at the 15:07 mark. In the third period, the Friars erupted for four goals, including freshman Christina Redmond’s first collegiate marker.
Butsch finished with two goals and two assists, while Stephenson and Culgin added one goal and two assists each. Senior Jennifer Kranz registered her first points of the season as she recorded two assists. Senior captain Kim Mathias also had two assists.
Providence outshot Quinnipiac, 29-5. Quinnipiac goaltender Mel Courtmanche and Catherine Lapare combined to make 22 saves. PC freshman goaltender Amy Thomas made five saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
The Friars improved to 14-10-3 overall and 8-5-2 in conference play, while Quinnipiac dropped to 3-20-1 overall and 0-16-0 in league play.
