It was a game for the record books at RIT’s Ritter Arena. Unfortunately for the Neumann Knights, the school records that RIT broke were all in the offensive category on the way to a 24-0 victory.
RIT broke its school record for most goals in a period, scoring ten in the second. The previous record was nine, which RIT set twice in two games against Scranton in 1994.
The Tigers set records for most goals in a game, surpassing the old record of 23, and goal differential in a game, passing the old record of 22.
Mike Bournazakis tied the long-standing record for most points in a game, tallying nine points with two goals and seven assists. Maurice Montambault held the record alone previously when he accumulated nine points against Brockport in 1985-86.
The Tigers took control of the scoreboard early in the contest and never relinquished it. At 2:47 in the first period, Lanner Fayad sent a pass across the crease to Bournazakis, standing on the doorstep. Bournazakis tapped in the pass and the Tigers were off to the races.
“This was one of those games where you just wanted it over,” said RIT coach Wayne Wilson. “No matter what side of the scoreboard you are on.”
The third period was played at about half speed by both teams, as they just went through the motions to complete the contest. Wilson called off the dogs early in the game when RIT spent most of the second and third periods dumping the puck deep in to the Knight zone instead of carrying it in.
Tyler Euverman earned his tenth career shutout, and fifth of the season.
RIT scored eight goals in the opening period, and two goals in the third. Not far behind Bournazakis was Josh Faulkner with four goals and three assists.
