The St. Lawrence Saints were unable to score until midway through the second period, but once they did, they tallied five unanswered goals en route to a 6-1 win over Yale. Junior forward Sara Simard led the Saints in scoring tonight with two goals and an assist, earning the first start of the game.
The Saints pulled away from the Bulldogs in the second period. After a scoreless first, the Saints netted their first goal at 12:29 on the power play, by senior defenseman Colleen Coakley, who ripped a shot past Bulldog’s goaltender Katie Hirte. Amanda Sargeant set up behind the net and passed through the seems to Coakley sliding into the slot from the point.
The Saints added another power-play goal three minutes later. Gina Kingsbury finished off a rebound of Meghan Maguire’s shot from the point, and the Saints ended the second period with a 2-0 lead and were outshooting the Bulldogs 25-8.
Within the first 5:21 of the third period, the Saints netted three more goals. The Saints scored their third power-play goal of the game two minutes into the period. Simard slid the puck through the goalies legs as she carried the puck out from behind the net with assists from Powers and Maguire.
Simard added another goal three minutes later, with assists from Jessica Wilson and Amy Hewitt. Wilson added the fifth Saints goal just 20 seconds later with assists from linemates Rebecca Russell and Simard.
Sara Wood scored the only Bulldogs goal with seven minutes remaining in the game. Wood capitalized on a three on two rush with assists from her linemates Deanna McDevitt and Nicole Symington. Freshman Whitney Carbone was allotted a shorthanded goal for the Saints after a puck was tipped in off a Bulldog defender. This concluded the scoring with the Saints winning 6-1.
The Saints (16-7-2, 8-1-0 ECAC North) outshot the Bulldogs (6-12-2, 2-7-0 ECAC North) 36-11. The Saints’ special teams went 9 for 11, scoring three power-play goals in five chances and killing off all six Bulldog chances.
These two teams meet again Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
