Freshman Jon Ames scored a goal and added three assists to lift the Connecticut past Fairfield, 6-0, Saturday evening at the UConn Ice Arena. The win marked the first shutout of the season for the Huskies and improved their record to 7-11-6 overall, 6-6-4 in the league. Fairfield dropped to 4-16-2 overall, 2-12-2 in the MAAC.
Connecticut jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Fairfield goalie Craig Schnappinger made an initial save out of the net off of an Ames shot, but Evan Schwarz, positioned between the faceoff circles, pushed the puck into the open net for the score at the 3:01 mark.
Matt Herhal also found an open net, as he scored off a pass from Ames at 15:58 of the period. Schwarz was also credited with an assist.
With just under four minutes left in the period, Scott Brown took a shot from the left point and drilled it into the back of the net, giving UConn the 3-0 lead heading into the second stanza.
D’Angelo scored a power-play tally at the 8:03 mark of the second period on assists from Ames and Mark Murphy. Anders Johnson flicked the puck into the top shelf of the net only 33 seconds later to give the Huskies the 5-0 lead. Bret Bostock assisted on the goal.
Ames’ goal came midway through the third period during a power-play opportunity. He was assisted by Murphy and Adam Rhein at the 11:14 mark.
UConn’s Jason Carey earned the win in net recording 25 saves, while Fairfield’s Schnappinger and Andrew Martin combined for 30 saves. UConn outshot Fairfield, 36-25.
