Lake Superior State University broke a three-game losing streak against Miami University with a 6-3 win at Taffy Abel Arena on Saturday night.
The Lakers lost a 3-0 contest to the RedHawks Friday, but got going early in the game Saturday when Derek Seal scored 1:38 into the first period.
Just 14 seconds later freshman Bo Cheesman netted his third goal of the season to put the Lakers ahead by two. At the 7:09 mark, Chris Peterson and Jeremy Bachusz set up sophomore Adam Nightingale on the power play to give LSSU the 3-0 lead.
Miami responded to the three-goal deficit with a goal from Mike Glumac at 11:11. Ken Marsch and Pavel Nejezchleb added assists on Glumac’s 11th goal.
Barry Pochmara lengthened the Laker lead to 4-1 when he scored at 14:28 in the first.
Neither team scored in the second, but by the end of the period the RedHawks had outshot the Lakers 23-14.
LSSU again took control in the third, when Nightingale scored his second of the night off a pass from freshman Jeff Mushaluk.
Less than a minute later Tom Stone scored his first of the season for Miami.
At 9:22 captain Chris McNamara netted an unassisted, shorthanded goal to give the Lakers the 6-2 lead.
Glumac added one more for the RedHawks before all was said and done, a power-play goal at 14:06 in the third to make the final score 6-3.
Matt Violin stopped 35 shots for the Lakers and improved to 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the CCHA.
The Lakers improved to 4-13-1 in the CCHA, while Miami fell to 7-9-2.
