Peverly Pair, Ackley Acrobatics Helps Saints Down Cats

Rich Peverley scored two goals — one shorthanded and one on the power play — and Kevin Ackley recorded 43 saves as the St. Lawrence Saints defeated Vermont, 5-2, Friday night in action at UVM’s Gutterson Fieldhouse.

St. Lawrence, 5-13-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the ECAC, took a 1-0 at 9:25 of the first period when Stace Page scored a power-play goal from the blue line. Russ Bartlett and Peverley assisted on the goal, Page’s sixth of the season. It came with Ryan Miller in the penalty box for obstruction interference.

Mike Muir gave the Saints a 2-0 early in the second period when he got the puck past Vermont goalie Shawn Conschafter on a wraparound. Charlie Daniels assisted on the goal, Muir’s second of the season and of his career.

St. Lawrence increased its lead to 3-0 at 4:42 of the period when Peverley scored his fourth of the season on the power play. Robin Carruthers and Page assisted.

Vermont, 2-14-2 overall and 2-6-1 in ECAC play, cut into St. Lawrence’s lead late in the second period when Scott Mifsud blocked a shot and broke in alone on Ackley, slipping the puck through the pads just as a St. Lawrence power play was ending. The goal was Mifsud’s fourth of the season

The second period ended with Ryan Glenn smashing Vermont’s Ryan Cox into the boards. Glenn received a five-minute major for boarding, and the Catamounts began the third period with a five-minute power play.

Just 15 seconds into the third, John Longo scored his team-leading fourth power-play goal of the season, with assists going to Cox and Bryson Busniuk. Later in the power play, Peverley scored his second of the night shorthanded to give St. Lawrence a 4-2 lead.

Blair Clarance scored his eighth goal of the season at 18:27 to make for the final margin.

Conschafter recorded 27 saves for Vermont.
