Bemidji State junior goaltender Bre Dedrickson pitched her third career shutout, saving 18 shots and leading the Beavers to a 5-0 victory over the Wayne State Warriors in nonconference action at the City Sports Center.
Dedrickson, who has now earned three of the six shutouts in BSU history, saved all four shots she faced in the first, eight in the second and six in the third to post her second shutout against the Warriors. Dedrickson’s first career shuout came against Wayne State on Oct. 30, 1999. She saved 17 shots in that win. Dedrickson then shut out Minnesota State-Mankato, saving 32 shots on Nov. 10, 2000.
“I think this got her confidence back,” BSU head coach Jason Lesteberg said of Dedrickson, making her first start since a 5-1 loss to Ohio State on Jan. 5. “I could tell during warmup she was going to have a good game. She was very focused.”
Dedrickson was backed up by a strong effort in BSU’s offensive zone. Lisa Peters scored her seventh goal of the season on the game’s first shift, a slapper from the blue line just 52 seconds into the contest to put BSU up 1-0. It was Peters’ third career game-winning goal and second this season.
Caesare Stimson scored the next two goals for BSU, at the 10:15 mark of the first and 9:13 of the second to put the Beavers ahead 3-0. Amber Fryklund (0:28, third) and Katie Ward (15:18, third) rounded out the BSU scoring attack for the evening.
“The kids worked extremely hard,” Lesteberg said. “Bre played well, but we did a good job of containing them and were able to cover up our mistakes. We played our best game in the offensive zone in quite awhile; we moved the puck well and created opportunities and chances for ourselves.”
Stimson, Fryklund and Lill Raynard had three points apiece for BSU. Stimson’s two goals led the way, and she assisted on Fryklund’s third-period tally for a season-high three points. It marked Stimson’s second multi-goal game this year and fifth of her career..
“When you work hard, good things happen,” Stimson said.
Fryklund, who was on the ice for all five Beaver goals, scored her 11th goal of the year and had two assists, including the first assist on Peters’ game-winner. It is her third multi-assist game this season and eighth of her career. Raynard tied her season high, and was just one off her career high, with three assists.
The Warriors, who have now lost seven consecutive games and are winless in their last nine starts, were shut out for the fourth consecutive game and for the fifth time in their last six starts. Wayne State has now gone 243:46 without scoring a goal, since 16:14 of the third period against Maine on Dec. 8.
Bemidji State improved to 9-8-5 with the win, while Wayne State fell to 3-16-2. The two teams wrap up their nonconference series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the City Sports Center.
