Providence defeated Boston College, 5-1, on Wednesday at Schneider Arena in an ECAC game.
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Hilary Greaves at the 15:43 mark of the first period. Providence increased its lead to 2-0 as sophomore defenseman Kelli Halcisak tallied her fourth goal of the season. Halcisak, who had just jumped onto the ice after serving a two-minute minor for interference, intercepted a pass from a BC defender at the blue line, skated in alone against freshman goaltender Lisa Davis and fired it in at the 18:33 mark of the opening period.
Halcisak struck again at the 9:25 mark of the second period as she tucked in a rebound off a Davis save for a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles cut the lead to 3-1 when senior Kelly McManus scored on a two-player advantage. Senior captain Kim Mathias increased the Friars’ lead to 4-1, as her slapshot from the just inside the blue line found the net five minutes into the third period. Freshman Rush Zimmerman capped off the scoring at 16:43 of the final period with her second tally of the season.
Providence outshot Boston College, 31-12. Davis made 26 saves for the Eagles in the loss, while Providence’s Amy Thomas stopped 11 shots.
With the win, the Friars improved to 8-8-3 overall and 5-4-2 in ECAC Eastern League play. The Friars are unbeaten in their last four games. Boston College fell to 3-11-3, 1-9-2 in league play.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19 when they host St. Cloud State at Schneider Arena at 2 p.m.
