Saints goaltender Rachel Barrie stopped all 19 Wayne State shots, and Trisha Powers netted the first goal just 1:24 into the game to give the Saints the game winner as St. Lawrence blanked the Warriors 5-0 Saturday.
Barrie’s shutout, her fourth of the year, tied the Saints’ Division I single-season record
The Saints capitalized on their first power play of the game when Warriors forward Kate Jones was called for body-checking. Powers tipped in Rebecca Russell’s shot from the point to put the Saints on the board.
Amanda Sargeant scored her first goal of the game at 15:26 after receiving a pass from junior defenseman Jess Knapp, and then her second of the game with 56 seconds remaining in the first period with assists from Knapp and Shannon Smith to give the Saints a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
The second period was scoreless for both teams. Barrie stopped 10 shots, while Tinna-Anne Thibideau stopped 15 for Wayne State
The Saints scored the last two goals of the game within five minutes of the third period. Freshman Christin Powers intercepted a Warriors pass and beat Thibideau, finding the top right corner of the net and giving the Saints a 4-0 lead at 3:26 into the period.
Freshman Whitney Carbone scored the final goal of the game 48 seconds later with assists from Suzanne Fiacco and Jess Wilson.
The Saints went 1-3 on the power play and killed off all four Warrior power plays. The Saints outshot the Warriors 46-19.
These two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
