Top-ranked Middlebury shut out Conn. College 4-0 to stay undefeated in NESCAC play Saturday.

Middlebury piled up 53 shots against the Camels, but good play by Conn. College goalie Anna Trafton kept the score close for much of the game.

Early on, the Camels gave up a goal to Middlebury’s Erin Neil, but then held Middlebury off the board until the last 10 seconds of the period. At 19:51, Lorna Gifis tipped a hard slapshot fired by Catherine Elkins from the blue line past Trafton for a 2-0 lead.

Nine minutes into the second period, just six seconds into a Conn. College penalty to Natalie McEachern for interference, Neil scored her second goal of the game after deflecting a shot by Elkins fired from the top of the right circle.

Later in the period, the Conn. College defense stood tall in killing off a five-on-three that lasted 1:43.

Middlebury finished off the scoring late in the third period as Laurie Richmond received the puck from Gifis and wristed it home for a 4-0 margin.

Middlebury’s Megan Hutchinson was called on to make only four saves in net for the shutout, her third of the season, while Conn. College’s Trafton made 49 stops in the game. Middlebury moves to 7-0 in the NESCAC and 8-0 overall, while Conn College drops to 1-6 in the conference and 1-8 overall.
