Thanks to Jaime VanMassenhove’s fifth goal of the season, seventh-ranked New Hampshire and Providence skated to a 2-2 tie on Sunday at the Whittemore Center.
The Friars opened the scoring at the 14:57 mark of the first period on Kim Mathias’ third goal of the season, but Randi MacMaster scored for the Wildcats just 21 seconds into the second to tie the game at 1-1.
Darlene Stephenson, who had added an assist on Mathias’ goal, gave PC a 2-1 advantage as she scored off a rebound. That set up UNH to tie the game with 3:30 left in regulation on VanMassenhove’s goal.
In the overtime period, the Wildcats outshot the Friars, 4-0, but PC’s freshman goaltender Amy Thomas stopped all four shots. For the game, Thomas finished with 26 saves. UNH’s Jenn Huggon made 18 stops.
With the tie, the Friars moved to 6-8-3 overall and 3-4-2 in ECAC Eastern League play, while the Wildcats went to 12-5-2, 7-1-1.
