Connecticut scored two third-period goals to rally from a 4-2 deficit and tie Army, 4-4, in a MAAC game at Tate Rink on Saturday night.
For the second consecutive night and the third time this season, UConn (4-9-5, 3-5-4 MAAC) and Army (4-11-4, 2-6-4) played to a tie. On Nov. 23 in Storrs, the game ended in a 2-2 knot, and Friday Army scored two third-period goals to tie the game at three apiece.
Army quickly opened up the scoring at the 2:12 mark of the first period on a shot from Chad Mayfield. UConn did not even the score until late in the period (17:35) on a power-play goal by Ron D’Angelo, but took the lead less than two minutes later on a Jon Ames score.
The second period belonged to the Black Knights as Joe Carpenter tallied three goals to give Army the 4-2 lead.
D’Angelo scored his second of the night to cut UConn’s deficit to one at the 9:36 mark of the third period. Mark Murphy scored his first collegiate goal and the game’s equalizer with just under five minutes remaining in regulation to send the game into the overtime period.
UConn’s Artie Imbriano earned the start in net stopping 46 shots on goal, while John Yaros recorded 43 saves for the Black Knights. Army outshot UConn, 50-47. Army and UConn had a combined 53 penalty minutes, as opposed to Friday night’s penalty-less game.
