Keith Gets Winner For UAF

RedHawks Fall On Last Second Goal To Alaska Fairbanks, 4-3

Cam Keith’s last-minute goal gave the visiting Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks a 4-3 victory over Miami (8-10-2, 5-7-2 CCHA) Saturday night.

UAF improved to 12-7-1 overall and 8-7-1 in the league on Keith’s goal at 19:24 in the third period. For the second straight night neither team was able to score on the power play, with both scoreless on four opportunities.

Senior Jason Deskins netted his 60th career goal when he stole the puck and scored to give Miami a 1-0 lead at 3:16 in the first period. Deskins’ goal pulled him even with assistant coach Chris Bergeron on Miami’s all-time scorers list with 120 career points (60-60-120).

Fairbanks didn’t take long to retaliate as Aaron Voros received a feed from David Keough and finished the play to knot the contest at one apiece. Voros’ game-tying goal came just 16 seconds after Deskins’ goal at 3:32 in the first frame.

The second period belonged to the Nanooks as both Keough and Ryan Campbell lit the lamp to give UAF a 3-1 lead entering the final 20 minutes. Keough put the Nanooks on top, 2-1, with a goal at 14:09. Just over a minute later, at 15:12, Ryan Campbell gave the Nanooks a 3-1 advantage entering the final stanza. Jared Sylvestre and Scott Farrell were credited with assists on Campbell’s goal.

Early in the third period Deskins connected with a shot through the five-hole to pull the RedHawks within one at 3-2. Sophomore Mike Kompon found the streaking Deskins open on a two-on-one break for Miami’s second goal at 5:02.

Kompon evened the game, 3-3, with his sixth goal of the season at 14:41 in the final period. Sophomores Derek Edwardson and Greg Hogeboom worked the puck around the back of the net before finding Kompon open on the right wing for the open shot.

With less than a minute remaining in the contest, UAF ended any chance of an overtime period when Bobby Andrews took a shot of the faceoff and Keith put the rebound into the back of the net for a 4-3 Nanook victory. Voros received the second assist on the game-winner after winning the faceoff in the Miami zone.
