St. Cloud saw a third-period lead slip away in the last 15 minutes, and Mercyhurst rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory over the Huskies Saturday afternoon at the National Hockey Center.
After a scoreless first period, SCSU went up 1-0 on Roxanne Stang’s 11th goal of the year at the 19:30 mark of the second period. The goal was assisted by Dana Pretty.
Mercyhurst tied it up at one each when Randi Pilger slipped a power-play shot past SCSU goalie Laura Gieselman at the 7:08 mark of the third period.
The two teams then headed to overtime, where Lindsay Dellow beat Gieselman for the game-winner at the 1:37 mark of the extra session.
Mercyhurst outshot the Huskies, 34-23, but Gieselman was brilliant in the nets, turning away several Laker scoring chances and stopping 32 shots. The Lakers outshot SCSU, 18-5, in the third period and overtime.
The Lakers capitalized on 1-of-4 power plays, while SCSU was 0-of-2.
The loss drops the Huskies to 4-11-1 overall, while Mercyhurst improves to 12-5-1 heading into Sunday’s second game of the series at 1:05 p.m.
