Bolstered by netminder Shannon Murphy’s 31 saves, Connecticut skated to a 4-2 victory over St. Cloud Friday night at the National Hockey Center.
The win improved Connecticut to 7-6-1 overall, while St. Cloud fell to 3-9-1 on the season.
Tiffany Owens opened the first-period scoring with two goals. The first notch came at the 3:19 mark of the period during the power play, assisted by Kim Berry and Laura Stosky. She scored her second goal with 2:22 left in the stanza with help from Berry.
Sara Mahoney scored the unassisted game-winner four minutes into the second period. St. Cloud’s Roxanne Stang responded less than three minutes later, only to have UConn’s Jacquelyn McGuire give the Huskies the 4-2 lead minutes later.
Abby Cooper brought SCSU within two at the 17:18 mark, but that was as close as St. Cloud could get.
SCSU’s Ellen Brinkman made 10 saves in net, allowing all four UConn goals, while Laura Gieselman stopped nine shots.
The two teams will face off again on Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the National Hockey Center.
