Army broke out of its scoring slump and ended a six-game winless streak with a convincing 9-2 victory over Bentley in front of 1,143 fans at Tate Rink on Friday night.
The Black Knights opened things up early with a four-goal first and cruised the rest of the way. Senior Joe Carpenter scored twice in the third period, once on the power play, as eight different Black Knights scored a goal. A total of 15 players put their names on the scoresheet, with junior Nic Serre appearing most often. He had a goal and two assists.
Freshman goalie John Yaros made 34 saves for Army, one shy of his season high, as he improved to 3-4-1 in his rookie year.
Carpenter’s first goal of the evening came with 15:45 left in the game and chased starting Bentley goalie Simon St. Pierre. Carpenter then one-timed a pass from Nathan Mayfield past reserve goaltender Bill Bridge while on the power play just seven minutes later. Freshman Tim Quinlan added a short-handed marker at 15:31 of the third to close out the scoring.
Chris Garceau, Serre, Jon Boyle and Chris MacLeod all scored in the first period for Army. The Black Knights had a 4-1 lead halfway through the first.
Tim Fisher and Derek Hines added goals in the second to extend the Black Knights lead to 6-1 after two.
These same two teams will go at it again Saturday night in Waltham, Mass. (7:30 p.m.).
