Army, Connecticut Can’t Settle On Winner

Thanks to a late goal from Army’s Joe Carpenter, Connecticut and Army played to a 2-2 tie in a MAAC game in front of 1,032 at the UConn Ice Arena on Friday night.

The two teams played scoreless through the first period, with Army taking the 15-8 advantage in shots on goal.

Army took the 1-0 lead on a goal by Chad Mayfield just over a minute into the second stanza. But Connecticut’s Anders Johnson then tied the score at the 6:22 mark of the period. Johnson took a wrist shot from the high slot, beating Black Knight goalie John Yaros, who was screened by his own teammates.

After a mostly scoreless third period, Johnson fed a pass across the mouth of the goal for a waiting Ames at the far post, who in turn tipped it in to give UConn the 2-1 lead at the 13:53 mark.

Army evened the score with a 1:38 remaining in regulation on a power-play tally from Carpenter.

UConn’s Jason Carey stopped 33 shots on goal, and Yaros recorded 27 saves in net for the Black Knights. Army went 1-8 on the power play, while UConn was 0-6.
