Nine different Amherst players scored, including senior forward Bob Miele’s hat trick plus an assist, as the Jeffs bombed visiting UMass-Boston, 14-2, Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink.
Amherst tallied eight third-period goals en route to the blowout, improving to 1-0-1 with its first victory of the season. UMass-Boston fell to 0-2 with the loss, having been outscored 21-6 in its first two games.
Miele cracked the scoring column once in every period, including the second goal of the game off a pair of assists by senior co-captain Greg Carr and junior defender Erich Schram. He also notched what turned out to be the game-winner 3:12 into the second period, again assisted by Carr and first-year phenom Beau Kretzman — the second of four Amherst power-play goals on the afternoon.
Carr had a great game in his own right, finishing with a game-high four assists. Senior co-captain Darren Reaume added a pair of goals and two assists, while junior forward Justin Pitrack and sophomore Mike Kreger each had two goals and an assist. In all, four Amherst players finished with four points — Kretzman, Miele, Reaume and junior forward Erik DiNardo, who posted a goal and three assists.
Amherst junior goaltender Justin Jagher continued his strong start with 17 saves in 44 minutes before giving way to fellow sophomore Jaffrie Perrotti, who turned away five shots in 16 minutes off the bench.
First-year forward Julian Giantonio and sophomore Sean Walsh each scored for UMass-Boston, with both goals coming in the second period.
