The St. Lawrence Saints beat the Vermont Catamounts, 9-,0 in the first of a two game series, allowing the Catamounts only one shot on goal.
The Catamounts have been struggling through their first year of Division 1 hockey, and the Saints proved that. The Saints have an overall record of 4-2-0, with the two losses to Northeastern, and a ECAC Northern record of 3-0-0, after beating Princeton twice last weekend at Princeton. Vermont is now 0-10-0 this season, with an ECAC North record of 0-5-0.
Although the first period ended with the Saints leading only 2-0, the Saints accumulated 24 shots on the junior Catamount goalie Tiffany Hayes. Hayes has a save percentage of .911 and faces an average of 57 shots per game and came up big for the Catamounts tonight. However, Hayes was not able to hold back the Saints. Trisha Powers tipped a shot from Amanda Sargeant at 5:23 to put the Saints on the scoreboard. Ricki-Lee Doyle, who transferred to St. Lawrence this year from St. Cloud University, scored the second and final goal of the period.
The Saints outshot the Catamounts 28-0 in the second period. Vicky Hauck started the second period off less than four minutes into the period. Powers added her second and final goal of the game seven minutes into the period while the Saints were on a power play. Sargeant passed the puck to Colleen Coakley on the point, and Powers tipped in Coakley’s shot from the point. Meghan Maguire took a shot from the point that Simard tipped in to end the second period with the scoreboard reading in favor of the Saints, 5-0.
The Saints tallied 21 shots in the third period giving them a total of 73 shots, and were not able to hold the Catamounts from getting a shot on net as the Catamounts did get one shot on net. Suzanne Fiacco scored a power play goal 4 minutes into the period. Freshman Amy Bombay scored her first career goal with the Saints at 5 minutes into the period. Freshman Whitney Carbone also scored her first career goal just 40 seconds later on a power play. Sargeant scored the final goal of the game unassisted.
The Saints power play was 3-5 tonight, while the Catamounts were 0-3. These two teams meet again Saturday at 4:00pm.
