Junior forward Marty Goulet scored with four seconds left in regulation to force overtime, as Bemidji State earned a 2-2 draw with the Union Skating Dutchmen Saturday at Achilles Rink.
The day after these two teams combined for 13 second- and third-period goals in a wild 8-6 Union win, the Beavers and Dutchmen locked up in a defensive battle which saw Union allow just 15 shots on net.
The Dutchmen drew first blood as Jeff Wilson beat BSU starting goaltender Dannie Morgan just 3:25 into the contest on an even-strength tally. Neither team would manage to score again until 6:44 elapsed in the third period, when BSU’s Todd Knott evened the score at a goal apiece with a shorthanded netter. It was the third shorthanded goal of Knott’s career.
Union then recaptured the lead just 55 seconds later as Joel Beal beat Morgan to put Union up 2-1 at the 7:39 mark of the second.
BSU head coach Tom Serratore pulled Morgan from the ice at 19:00 of the third, and with just four seconds to play in regulation Goulet found the back of the net, beating starting Dutchmen goaltender Kyle Loney to force the extra period. Jeff McGill and Andrew Murray assisted on the game-tying tally, the first game-tying goal of Goulet’s career.
Morgan started in goal for the Beavers and earned the draw. He saved 31 of 33 shots faced, including four saves in overtime. He improved his season record to 1-1-1.
BSU improved to 0-1-2 all-time against Union College and evens its all-time record against current members of the ECAC at 2-2-2. The Beavers also improved to 0-3-1 on the road this year.
Bemidji moved to 3-4-1 overall with the tie, while Union is now 3-1-1.
