Providence defeated the University of Maine, 7-2, on Saturday at Schneider Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Friars struck 34 seconds into the second period as junior Jenn Butsch scored off an assist from sophomore Meredith Roth.
Roth increased PC’s lead to 2-0 as she scored on the power play at the 6:25 mark of the second period.
Sophomore Sarah Youlen scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 18:14 mark of the second period as she tallied her first of the season off a scramble in front of the net. The goal gave PC a 3-0 lead going into the third period.
Butsch scored two goals for the Friars, while Roth and senior Kim Mathias tallied one goal and one assist each. Freshman Carrie Holldorf scored her first collegiate goal as gave the Friars a 5-0 lead.
Karen Droog and Tracy Caridade scored for the Black Bears; Kelly Nelson assisted on both of Maine’s goals.
Providence outshot Maine, 32-20. Sophomore goaltender Amy Quinlan made 18 saves in the win, while Maine’s Dawn Froats and Lara Smart combined to make 25 saves.
With the win, the Friars improved to 3-2, 1-0 ECAC while the Black Bears fell to 2-3, 0-3 ECAC.
