Black Knights End Losing Streak With 7-2 Win Over AIC

Army put an end to its four-game losing streak with a 7-2 victory over visiting American International College at Tate Rink on Saturday night. The win marked Army’s first victory in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference this season.

Junior defenseman Joe Dudek scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the offensive onslaught. Army (1-4-0/1-2-0 MAAC) scored the first five goals of the contest before AIC (1-5-0/0-4-0 MAAC) got on the scoreboard at the 5:58 mark of the second period.

The Black Knights opened a five-goal lead with three tallies in the first five minutes of the second. Nathan Mayfield scored 47 seconds into the period and Carpenter added a goal at 2:22 while on the power play. Freshman defenseman Nick Cahill scored his first career goal at 5:09 of the second when he shot the puck into an open net from the blue line. AIC starting goalie Chad Davis argued that he was interfered with and dragged out of the crease. However, referee Steve Richetelli disagreed and allowed the goal to stand.

Freshman Chris Garceau had a goal and an assist, and both Nic Serre and Chad Mayfield had two assists. Captain Tim Murphy added an exclamation point to the victory with a goal off his own rebound with 50 seconds left in the contest.

Army was 3-for-4 on the power play and rifled 37 shots on AICs two netminders — Cahill’s marker in the second period chased Davis. Fellow freshman Frank Novello made 21 saves in relief, playing the final 35 minutes. Army freshman goalie John Yaros made 22 saves in net for the victory.
