Freshman Troy Weibler scored his first career goal at 1:51 of overtime to give Bentley its first win of the season, 3-2, over American International in MAAC Hockey League action Saturday night at the Olympic Ice Center.
Weibler’s goal capped quite a night for the Falcons’ freshman class, which provided all three scores and two of the five assists, as well as the winning goalie.
Bentley (1-5, 1-1 MAAC) led 1-0 after one after Bryan Goodwin scored on a power play at 6:50. It was his third goal and sixth point already this season.
AIC (1-3, 0-2 MAAC) jumped in front with two unanswered goals in the middle period, both by sophomore Guillaume Caron. He evened the score at 4:33 and put his club on top with 2:10 left in the second.
Bentley, which had struggled in the third period this year, got the equalizer with 6:38 left in regulation. Nick Carosa put it in, with his second of the year assisted by senior defenseman Steve Tobio and freshman Seth Vinocur. For both, it was their second assist of the night.
Weibler scored his game-winner on a shot from a tough angle to the side of the net. Sophomore Mike Ciaretta provided the assist.
Freshman Simon St. Pierre earned his first collegiate win after turning in another solid effort in net. He was credited with 44 saves while his counterpart from AIC, freshman Frank Novello had 48.
Bentley is at Canisius next Friday night (7 p.m.) and Mercyhurst next Saturday (7 p.m.).
