Alabama-Huntsville overcame a 3-1 Canisius lead in the second period and defeated the Griffins, 5-4.
Canisius (0-1-0) opened the scoring as Marc Bouffard notched his first of the year for the Griffs at the 4:03 mark of the first period.
The Chargers would knot the score at a goal apiece on a goal by Craig Bushey at the 15:06 mark.
Bouffard scored his second goal of the game just 1:44 into the second stanza and the Griffs increased the lead to 3-1 on a power-play goal by Fred Coccimiglio at the 7:49 mark, his first collegiate goal.
After Coccimiglio’s goal the second period belonged to Alabama-Huntsville as the Chargers (3-0-0) scored four goals in remaining 12 minutes to take the 5-3 advantage.
Jason Tinwick scored his first of the year to cut the Canisius lead to 3-2 at the 8:59 mark and Gerald Overton lit the lamp again for the Chargers at the 12:12 mark, his second of the year.
Alabama-Huntsville took their first lead of the game with 3:44 remaining in the second period as Jason Hawes scored on a pass from Ryan Leasa.
Jared Ross would score the eventual game-winner at the 17:09 mark, giving Alabama-Huntsville a 5-3 lead after two periods of play.
Canisius would cut the Chargers’ lead in half on Rob Martin’s goal at the 6:46 mark, but the Griffs were unable to knot the game in the final period, despite 20 shots on goal in the final 20 minutes.
Adam MacLean stopped 35 shots in the win for Alabama-Huntsville, while Canisius’ Sean Weaver turned away 24 shots in the Griffs’ loss.
Canisius and Alabama-Huntsville will meet again Saturday evening.
