Though seldom tested, freshman goaltender John Yaros made 12 saves as Army (2-0-0) downed Seneca College, 2-0, Saturday night in front of 1,147 fans at Tate Rink. Yaros picked up the shutout in his first collegiate start.
The win also marked the first time in almost two years that the Black Knights won on back-to-back nights. Army defeated Seneca (3-2-0), 5-1, Friday night.
Senior left winger Nathan Mayfield tallied both of Army’s goals, each coming in the third period on the power play. Mayfield beat Sting goalie Arthur Strojny from off the left post 2 minutes 28 seconds into the final period. His rising slapshot from just inside the zone gave the Black Knights a welcomed 2-0 cushion nine minutes later.
Power play partner Josh Morino was in on both goals, picking up secondary assists. Senior Joe Carpenter got the primary assist on the first marker, with freshman defenseman Matt Field feeding Mayfield for his one-timer at 11:13.
Army hammered the Seneca goal for the second straight night. Saturday, the Black Knights got off 59 shots, marking the highest shot total since they took 60 against Nichols two years ago. The shutout was Army’s first since it blanked Assumption, 9-0, in December of 1999.
Mayfield’s two goals matched his career high set last New Year’s Eve against Queens College.
Army is off until it opens up the road portion of its schedule next Friday and Saturday night at Niagara. Game time for both of those contests is 7 p.m.
