Russ Kelley scored with 1:44 left in overtime to lift The University of Findlay to a 3-2 victory over the University of Windsor in an exhibition tilt at the Clauss Ice Arena Sunday evening.
Chris Wyzgowski made a great centering pass and found Kelley in front of the net, who then beat Windsor goaltender Ryan Gelinas for the victory.
With Wyzgowski in the penalty box, the Lancers got on the board first, when Jason Melo beat Findlay starter Jamie VandeSpyker midway through the second period.
It would stay 1-0 until the third period when Jason Maxwell scored a shorthanded goal for the Oilers early in the third period. Team captain Andy Croak picked up the assist.
One minute later, Melo scored again for the Lancers, this time beating Kevin Fines on the short side.
With Fines pulled for an extra attacker, Croak sent the game to overtime for the Oilers, beating Gelinas with 34 seconds left in regulation. That set up Kelley’s heroics during the extra session.
Findlay outshot Windsor 32 to 21 for the game. Gelinas made 29 saves for the Lancers, while VandeSpyker and Fines combined to stop 19 Windsor shots.
The Oilers begin their regular season next Friday night when they travel to Mercyhurst College in the start of a home and home series. The two teams play in Erie, Pennsylvania on Friday at 7:30 pm, and then at Findlay on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
