Jeff Campbell scored three goals and freshman goaltender Mike Mantua provided 29 minutes of
shutout hockey as Western Michigan defeated the University of Toronto, 6-2, in exhibition action at Lawson Arena.
Campbell also recorded the game-winning goal, top shelving a backhander with just one second left in the first period.
Toronto built a 2-1 lead late in the first period before WMU responded with five unanswered goals, finishing with a 51-12 advantage in shots.
“I’m really pleased with how with played today,” said WMU coach Jim Culhane. “I thought the guys skated hard and showed a lot of intensity.”
Senior Jeff Reynaert started in goal, making seven saves before giving way for Mantua in the second period. Mantua didn’t allow any goals in 29:49 of play, making three stops.
WMU opens its regular season next weekend, playing host to Alaska Fairbanks (Oct. 12-13) in Lawson Arena.
