Wildcats Rip Ottawa With Special Teams

The University of New Hampshire rode six special team goals and a four goal first period to down The University of Ottawa, 9-1, in exhibition play.

Lanny Gare led the scoring parade with two goals and three assists. Jim Abbott chipped in with a goal and three assists and Darren Haydar added two goals.

The Wildcats had five power play goals on the evening and one short-handed, but the first goal of the game was scored by Patrick Foley, just 1:44 into the game. The first special teams goal came when Abbott score on the power play at 7:11.

Colin Hemingway added a short-handed goal and Gare scored his first goal of the game to end the first period with a 4-0 lead.

Gare scored again on the power play to open up the second period and Nathan Martz made it 6-0. Mike Corneau broke up the shutout for Ottawa with a power play goal.

But Haydar scored twice on the power play in the third to seal it. Tyler Scott picked up the ninth UNH goal.

New Hampshire opens up the regular season by hosting Vermont on October 13.
