Miguel Lafleche scored with just 11.8 seconds in remaining in overtime to give Ohio State a 4-3 victory at Goggin Ice Arena. The win marked Ohio State head coach John Markell’s 100th career victory at the helm of the Buckeyes.
With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 15-11-2 overall (12-8-2 CCHA). The RedHawks fall to 16-12-2 (13-9-1). The Buckeyes gained a split of the weekend series, as Miami had posted a 4-1 win Friday. The squad has won its last two games in Goggin, following an 18-game winless streak.
The Buckeyes got on the board first, scoring at the 7:19 mark. Pete Broccoli passed the puck up to Dave Steckel just after the Buckeyes had killed off a Miami power play. Steckel beat the RedHawk defenseman and passed the puck to Paul Caponigri, who had almost the entire net to shoot at.
Miami tied the game with just 48 seconds remaining in the first period as Mike Kompon tallied his 10th goal of the season.
In the second period, the Buckeyes took their first lead of the game, as Scott May tallied at the 10:57 mark.
Miami responded quickly, as Greg Hogeboom tallied just 27 seconds later.
The Buckeyes ended the second period with a power-play goal at the 19:56 mark.
The RedHawks tied the game at three 4:59 into the third stanza, as Pat Leahy tallied his 10th goal of the campaign.
In overtime, with just 11.8 seconds remaining, Nick Ganga carried the puck up ice and passed to Lafleche, who got the puck past Miami goalie David Burleigh for the game-winner.
Ohio State goalie Mike Betz posted 37 saves in the win, as Miami posted 40 shots on goal. Burleigh stopped 24-of-28 Ohio State shots.
