Bentley freshman Tim Calabro’s wrist shot at 7:21 of the third period broke a 2-2 tie and led the Falcons to their second straight win, 4-2 over American International in MAAC action on Saturday at the Ryan Rink.
Calabro tucked a shot from just inside the faceoff circles over the shoulder of AIC goalie Chance Thede for his third goal of the season.
Sophomore Marcus Willy added an empty-net goal with 34 seconds left to put the game away. It was Willy’s second straight empty-netter as the Bentley co-captain also scored into an empty goal on Friday as the Falcons topped Army, 7-4.
Senior goalie Ray DeVincent made 29 stops to earn the victory, his third of the season. DeVincent is 3-2-1 in his last six games.
After a first period that featured no scoring and no penalties, Bentley finally broke the deadlock at 2:25 of the second when Lovell knocked home the rebound of a shot from the point by senior defenseman Andy Cavanagh.
Five minutes later, at 7:21, freshman Mike Mulligan scored when he finished off a partial breakaway created by a steal at center ice by Lovell. It was Mulligan’s 11th goal of the season.
The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 2-1 at 12:13 when freshman Guillaume Caron scored with assists to junior Olivier Gagnon and freshman Anthony Rufrano. The trio clicked again just 25 seconds into period No. 3 to tie the game, this time Gagnon scored with Rufrano and Caron picking up the assists.
That set up Calabro’s game-winner with 12:32 left to play.
For the game, the Falcons outshot the Yellow Jackets 42-31, the second straight time that Bentley has reached the 40-shot mark. In Friday’s win over Army, Bentley outshot the Black Knights, 40-25.
The victory improves Bentley to 4-16-2 overall, 3-14-2 in MAAC play while AIC drops to 8-15-1 overall, 8-10-1 in the conference. It was Bentley’s second straight win over the Yellow Jackets. On Jan. 6, the Falcons topped AIC, 5-3.
