The Big Green of Dartmouth avenged a loss to Northeastern, their first of the year, by soundly defeating ECAC foe Maine 5-2 on Saturday at Thompson Arena. Sophomore forward Carly Haggard scored what proved to be the eventual game winner only 1:18 into the second period, stuffing the rebound of a Kristin King shot past Maine goalie Amanda Cronin.
The win lifts Dartmouth to 11-1-1 (9-1-1 ECAC) on the season, while Maine falls to 8-9-0 (3-8-0 ECAC).
Dartmouth came out of the gate quickly, heavily pressuring Maine in its end throughout the first period. That heavy pressure led to the first Dartmouth goal at 2:49 of the first period as defenseman Liz Macri’s shot from the point found its way into the net.
Dartmouth continued to dominate the game territorially and this eventually led to its second goal of the game, this one by Carrie Sekela, who was sent in all alone thanks to a beautiful pass from Haggard at 10:24 of the first.
It was more of the same in the second period as Dartmouth freshman Louise Pietrangelo netted her first career goal in addition to the game winner by Haggard, making the score 4-0 at the end of two periods.
Just as it seemed Dartmouth might turn the game into a route, Maine fought back with two power play goals in the third period. The first came on a 5-on-3 situation as Andrea Keller fired a shot past Dartmouth netminder Amy Ferguson. Jarin Sjogren of Maine then made the score 4-2 with 1:15 seconds remaining in the game as she stuffed home a loose puck from in close.
Any hopes of a Maine comeback were shattered only 15 seconds later however as Carly Haggard scored her second of the game to seal the win for Dartmouth.
The win moved Dartmouth’s record to 68-2 when leading after 2 periods since the 1995-96 season.
Ferguson made 16 saves for Dartmouth, while Amanda Cronin turned in a stellar effort, stopping 45 shots for Maine.
