Mark McRae slammed home a rebound with 14 seconds left in overtime to lift Cornell to a 3-2 win over Vermont. The goal came on the power play and was McRae’s second of the evening.
With the win, Cornell improves to 7-4-3 overall and 5-1-1 in the ECAC, while Vermont falls to 9-5-1 (5-2-1 ECAC).
Vermont got on the board first when Bryson Busniuk took a quick pass from a Jim Gernander steal and fired it past Matt Underhill from the left faceoff circle.
In the second period, the Big Red pulled even at four-on-four as Alex Gregory found Larry Pierce from behind the net. Pierce quickly moved it to McRae and he flipped it past Andrew Allen for the goal.
Andrew McNiven made it 2-1 for Cornell early in the third period with his first of the season. Shane Palahicky raced down the left wing and he sent a pass to Krystof Wieckowski. Allen made the initial save, but McNiven was there to put the rebound home.
The Cats tied it later in the period as Graham Mink scored.
Vermont started the overtime on the power play but could not convert, and then went down a man as Andreas Moborg was called for hooking with 49 seconds left in the overtime.
Cornell will travel to Dartmouth on Saturday while Vermont will host Colgate.
