Saturday night at the National Hockey Center, Alaska-Anchorage rallied with two third-period goals, but it wasn’t enough to offset a solid St. Cloud attack as the Huskies collected a 4-3 WCHA victory over the Seawolves.
SCSU opened the game’s scoring at 3:45 in the first period on Jon Cullen’s seventh goal of the season, with assists from Keith Anderson and Jeff Finger. Cullen has now scored at least one point in each of the last eight games.
Senior forward Ritchie Larson added the Huskies’ second goal at 9:40 of the first with assists from Tyler Arnason and Brandon Sampair, but UAA notched its first goal at 13:56 of the second when Pete Talafous scored with an assist from Jesse Unklesbay.
Larson responded with his third goal of the season at 6:40 of the second on dishes from Sampair and Arnason. Then, on the power play, SCSU sophomore Joe Motzko scored the eventual game-winner at 15:30 of the second with assists from Larson and Ryan Malone.
UAA made things interesting in the third with a goal by Joe Garvin at the 6:53 mark on the power play and another goal by Talafous at 10:05, but St. Cloud hung on for the sweep.
UAA outshot the Huskies 27-23 in the game. SCSU’s Jake Moreland gained 24 saves, while Chris King posted 19 for UAA.
The win moves St. Cloud to 13-4-1 overall and 8-4-0 in the WCHA; UAA falls to 5-10-1, 3-8-1 WCHA.
