In a wild affair featuring more than 100 minutes in penalties, the Fairfield Stags skated to a
5-2 victory over Bentley. Rae Metz led the Fairfield offense, scoring twice and handing out one assist.
The Stags jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period and added a fourth goal just 3:56 into the second period before the game took an unexpected turn. In the crazy second stanza, officials handed out four 10-minute misconduct penalties and one game misconduct. When the dust cleared, Fairfield had struck for two power-play goals to lead 5-2 after two.
Both teams were held scoreless during the third period, but 19 more minutes in penalties were called.
Fairfield improved to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the MAAC while Bentley dipped to 0-10-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the conference.
Trailing 2-0 after Stag goals by Metz and Joe Whelan, the Falcons got on the board at 10:27 of the first period when John DiGennaro finished off a pass from freshman Scott Trahan.
Metz scored Fairfield’s third goal and Dan Cotter was credited with the fourth.
At 6:28 of the second period, Michael Ciarletta scored his first collegiate goal, but Fairfield’s Bernard Gately gave the Stags some breathing room with a power-play strike at 10:53.
Craig Schnappinger made 12 stops on the way to the win for Fairfield while Ray DeVincent played the first two periods and took the loss for the Falcons. Bill Bridge made 11 stops in a scoreless third period.
