Darlene Stephenson’s two goals and two assists helped Providence rout Vermont in a non-conference game on Saturday at Schneider Arena.
The Friars got on the scoreboard first at 2:36 of the first period and did not look back. Sophomore forward Jenn Butsch notched what proved to be the game-winning goal on passes from junior defenseman Christa Talbot and senior forward Erin Cannon. PC added a goal from Stephenson to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Providence exploded for five goals in the second period, three of which came in the sixth minute. Junior forward Kim Mathias sparked PC’s first line as she scored at 5:05 and 5:19 of the period. Junior forward Jackie Tamsin added PC’s fifth goal of the game at 5:59 with assists going to senior defenseman Val Bono and sophomore forward Danielle Culgin.
Providence took the 9-0 decision as the Friars added two-third period goals. Providence outshot the Catamounts, 51-5.
Vermont sophomore Tiffany Hayes stopped 42 shots while Providence freshman netminder Amy Quinlan recorded her first career shutout.
