Michigan downed Alask-Fairbanks on Friday evening, 8-0, getting two goals from Mike Cammalleri and four assists from Andy Hilbert.
The Wolverines converted three of seven power play attempts and one shorthanded goal while stopping Alaska-Fairbanks (1-6-2, 1-4-2 CCHA) on all five of its power play chances.
John Shouneyia put the Wolverines on the scoreboard first with a pwoer play goal 9:41 into the first period. Hilbert’s shot from the right corner of the Nanook zone was partially deflected into the air by UAF goalie Lance Mayes. After Mayes lost sight og the puck, Shouneyia tapped in the rebound.
Michigan (8-2-2, 6-2-0 CCHA) extended the lead to two goals late in the second period on Cammalleri’s fourth goal of the season. Cammalleri worked a two-on-one break with Hilbert and beat Mayes.
The Wolverines made it 3-0 on Shouneyia’s power play goal late in the second period. Mark Mink fired a shot from the left point that deflected off a defender and bounced to Shouneyia.
Joe Kautz picked up his first collegiate goal with 30 seconds remaining in the second period to make it 4-0.
Geoff Koch scored shorthanded early in the third period and then Cammalleri scored his second of the game to make it 6-0.
Jed Ortmeyer added two goals in the final ten minutes to round out the scoring.
Josh Blackburn made 23 saves for the Wolverines. Mayes yielded six goals and made 27 saves before being replaced by Preston McKay, who made 16 saves and allowed two goals.
“The game was in the balance in the second period and Blackburn was a factor,” said Michigan head coach Red Berenson. “They had four or five point-blank scoring chances that on another night might have gone in.
“Then, we got the goals that we needed at the end of the second period. It was not an 8-0 game. This Fairbanks team is a pretty good team and in the second period they were every bit as good as we were.”
The two teams finish out the series on Saturday night.
